<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The design allows for molding both sides at once, an improvement on the
one half at a time design of my old molds. I'm using .08" Boltaron for
the sheaths.<br /><br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Trimming is done on a holding fixture in the CNC router, which is also what was used to make the mold.<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /><br />The completed and assembled sheath.<br />
<br />

<br />By comparison, one of my old molds and trim jig. They're pieced together from waterjet cut pieces. The mold is one of a pair, since it only molds one half of the sheath. The trim jig holds both halves of the sheath at once, but mounting them was always aggravating. Holes were hand -drilled, slots were cut with a Dremel in a router table attachment, excess material trimmed with a bandsaw, and the profile trimmed on a router with a bearing bit. The CNC router does all of that more quickly, safely, and consistently. <br />

While I'm working to build more inventory more quickly, it will be far quicker to buy what is already in stock from a dealer than wait for me to be able to work my way down the list to yours.Helm Enterprises, Forging Divisionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17078122225999722290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3480267906382697382.post-25574319679599104242019-06-15T20:50:00.000-07:002019-06-15T20:50:22.277-07:00Putting more "tech" in the mid-tech lineFor a while now, I've been partnered with <a href="https://www.jbknifeandtool.com/" target="_blank">JB Knife and Tool</a> working to add more "tech" into my mid-tech line of knives and tomahawks. With shared work space, tooling, and expertise, we are working together to bring a greater quantity of high quality blades to meet our various customers' needs.<br />
<br />
The most recent fruit of our combined efforts can be seen in my upgraded tomahawks. The batch put together for the Blade Show and for <a href="https://www.bluelinegear.com/shop-brands/Helm-Forged" target="_blank">Blue Line Gear</a>, in addition to slightly wider tangs, a switch to 80CrV2 steel, and Cerakote, featured the first handle scales I've shaped with a CNC router and the first sheaths to have holes, slots, and outline cut with a CNC router. As a result, I was able to add new texture to the TeroTuf scales for extra grip upon Ryan Johnson of Blue Line Gear's request (something that I like and will make standard on my 'hawk handles) and produce a larger batch in less time than I've previously been able to do.<br />
<br />
Here's a look behind some of the process to build the tomahawks in this batch.<br />
<br />
It began with my first batch of blanks to be waterjet cut directly by my steel supplier, the New Jersey Steel Baron. I did not build all of these for the Blade Show, only 27. :D<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Someone on Facebook commented about them having nothing to do with blacksmithing and added "Add a handle and your [sic] done..." followed by a sad face. That shows very little understanding of what it takes to build a quality blade, even using modern methods. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I drilled out all the rivet holes to size, countersunk them slightly, and broke all sharp edges on the blanks where they would be comfortable to handle anywhere without digging into your hand. Then I set up my new DD Work Rest for the main bevels and a homebrewed work rest for the spikes, marked my centers and grind lines, and got to grinding.</div>

They're waterjet cut from 1/4" 4140, ground and heat treated, with a Cerakote ceramic gun coating, with Boltaron sheaths.<br />

I had an interesting opportunity pop up recently when I was contacted about making a couple of knives to be used as diplomatic gifts between the US Army and a couple of generals in the Mexican Army. I didn't have a whole lot of time to work with, but I happened to have some prototype mid-tech Benghazi Warfighter and Little Rok blades already ground, heat treated, and powdercoated, so I agreed. </div>

The second one is a prototype rescue ax dubbed my "Fire Chief" model. This was bought by a fellow who is prominent in Second Amendment matters here in Texas. I have not yet designed the sheath tooling for it, but he has a Kydex sheath business and built his own. He headed east to help out folks in high water.<br />

Finally can post this video. Chris "hinted" too strongly that I was filming for FiF (what, a bladesmith in San Antonio can't suddenly take a winter vacation in New York just because?) so I had to wait. <br />
<br /> Nothing too demanding, but this was on top of splitting up wood to feed a firepit for several hours and various other chores, without touching up the edge before shooting the video.Helm Enterprises, Forging Divisionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17078122225999722290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3480267906382697382.post-82734823570824085332017-03-03T12:30:00.004-08:002017-03-03T12:30:37.788-08:00More mini-parangsI finished up a few mid-tech mini-parangs recently. These are made from blanks waterjet cut from 3/16" thick 80CrV2, then ground and heat treated by me. Handles are TeroTuf with flared stainless steel tubing rivets.<br />

I weighed one before it went out to the customer. 21.8 ounces, or 1.36 pounds. Not bad! Balance feels good in the hand and the handle is both comfortable and plenty large for those of us with gorilla paws. Lots of chopping power in a small overall package.<br />

It was won by Chris Thorn of DropForged survival, who filmed the day's activities. We'll be filming the process of building a Kydex sheath for it, plus some more cutting with it.<br />
<br />
Here it is in Chris's hand:<br />

There's lot of thought that goes into the design work of my 'hawks. Usually there's more than one reason behind why I decided to build them a certain way.</div>
<div abp="654">
</div>
<div abp="655">
For instance, the flared stainless steel tube rivets are a very strong, solid construction method. But the fact that they're a tube means that you can run cord through them, using them as an anchor point for a lanyard, a handle wrap, or both.</div>
<div abp="656">
</div>
<div abp="657">
(From a manufacturing standpoint, the countersunk holes in the handle slabs not only allow the tubes to flare and solidly lock them to the tang, but also allow me to mount the slabs on the jigs that I use to shape the slabs, using machine screws. Sometimes there is more than two reasons behind the design. :D )</div>
<div abp="658">
</div>
<div abp="659">
A customer who has been using the heck out of his older 12" Wrecker from back when I was still using Durabake and Micarta instead of black oxide and TeroTuf posted this picture on FaceBook recently where he had taken advantage of the tube rivets in the aforementioned manner.</div>

I got his permission to post the video and his comments. His 'hawk has the black oxide finish and tan TeroTuf handles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/jWQKD_Qnmz0/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jWQKD_Qnmz0?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<br /><br />
Here's what he told me in his e-mail:<br />
<br />
"I am very happy with Wrecker tomahawk. I did some testing last weekend. I find that tomahawk cuts very deep in soft wood. Handle is good and I didn´t feel any slippage from hand. Spike is very useful when splitting wood."<br />
<br />
I found the use of the spike to split the wood particularly interesting. It's not something that I have personally tried during my testing. Good to see the spike being multi-functional. :)<br />
<br />
Not sure what all the white stuff on the ground is, though. We don't have such things in San Antonio. :DHelm Enterprises, Forging Divisionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17078122225999722290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3480267906382697382.post-80083386571630860442015-11-15T20:23:00.001-08:002015-11-15T20:23:10.726-08:00Heaping helping of 'hawksI have not posted tomahawk pictures like I meant to. So, in no particular order, tomahawks I've made in the last half a year or so. All are 1/4" 4140, black oxide finish, TeroTuf scales, flared stainless steel tube rivets. Kydex sheaths with a variety of carry hardware.<br />

Ok, I should be pretty well caught up. :)Helm Enterprises, Forging Divisionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17078122225999722290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3480267906382697382.post-70030017898554429122015-10-29T21:09:00.002-07:002015-10-29T21:09:20.165-07:00Woodsman, Benghazi Warfighters, Little Roks, and forged oxtail camp chopperMy brother-in-law asked me to donate a couple of blades for a Ducks Unlimited auction, with the opportunity to sell blades at the event. Time was short, but this is what I put together. My wife went in my stead; I have blades to make and friends coming in from out of town. She's a good 'un. :)<br />
<br />
The Woodsman 'hawk and one of the Benghazi Warfighters were the auction items, with the other Benghazi Warfighter and two Little Roks for sale.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk8MgDzLEBhTZjKuAzbUDoDnZ68Mtov9RnPQQPSJq_I_wQegPHB-NABS1uD-jPmhAYMlycb5DJC8LclgBy97AzVjaQ1JQtvPZeOlSjRqlNTqztfSOMuHg61mY3ijqrhLhld7ywOOlAIeE/s1600/dugroup.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk8MgDzLEBhTZjKuAzbUDoDnZ68Mtov9RnPQQPSJq_I_wQegPHB-NABS1uD-jPmhAYMlycb5DJC8LclgBy97AzVjaQ1JQtvPZeOlSjRqlNTqztfSOMuHg61mY3ijqrhLhld7ywOOlAIeE/s400/dugroup.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The 'hawk is 1/4" 4140 steel, the knives are 3/16" 80CrV2, and they all have back TeroTuf handle slabs and a black oxide finish.<br />
<br />
On the other end of the spectrum, I also sent along a forged 5160 oxtail camp chopper with a 12" blade and a hybrid handle wrap. It has a foundation of neoprene along the tang (something new for me, instead of the leather I have been using), with an underlay of hemp, an overlay of stripped paracord, and a three-strand Turk's head knot of intact paracord, all impregnated with West System marine epoxy.<br />

<br />
He sent me pictures of this 18" War Chief with black oxide finish and black TeroTuf that the owner had requested a sheath for. As always, beautiful work, Noah!<br />
